Boomerville–Week 1

011 001
009This is our fourth year at Boomerville, the Escapee Boomer’s Annual Gathering at Quartzsite. We arrived early and were the 5th to arrive; one week later there are 83 rigs. This year we don’t have a designated Host but we have many individuals stepping forward to make this a really great year. Steve and Pam Ritchie, pictured with the group at left, are handling the Happy Hour Announcements, Clark Messick brought the sound system, Bob and Gretchen Mattison have the tent for the white board, activity calendar, recycling center & free station, Ken & Sue Pace are hosting Movie nights for any who want to share their trip pictures and Chuck & Don Wicks are managing the twice weekly garbage runs. Beth Miller and Judy Sheeley hosted a breakfast brunch, Sue Pace hosted a dinner potluck and Bob and Gretchen are feeding us pancakes every 3 days. There are daily walks & hikes, a 4 x 4 drive through the back country, a women’s discussion group and a men’s donut run, a Kindle clinic, a fire extinguisher demo, a smart phone exploratory and many more group activities to come.

John & Julie Black, Jan and Kathy Webster012

Along with all of that we’ve had wonderful times visiting with friends and neighbors. When there were just a few of us here the first several days we had fun Happy Hours with the Harrisons, Sheeleys & Meilikes. Friday we had lunch in town w/Bryan & Susan Lavender. We’ve ordered  Magne Shades for our MH from Ken & Mary Ann Watson, played pegs & jokers and dinner w/Blacks & Websters and delicious turkey dinner this evening at Dick & Beth Millers w/Sheeleys, Schindels and Bob Emch. So far ‘movie night’ has featured pictures presentations of power parachuting over Oregon & Utah by Tom Doerr, Australia by Dean & Judy Sheeley and Burning Man by Ken & Sue Pace. The weather has been pretty nice; mostly sunny, little wind and 70’s & 80’s during the day. This is a stark contrast to the past 2 years of chilly, windy, rainy weather!

CA Desert & Algodones, Mexico

013016(Jan) The Moores and Sheeleys made their home in the desert on BLM ground near Ogilby Road, west of Yuma and east of the Great Sand Dunes in California for 10 days in early January. The weather was a bit chilly and rather windy but still allowed for some good days of walking and hiking. We once again hiked to the top of the Ogilby Hills and then took a long, scrambling way down to the south and then west; an excellent day of climbing & hiking! We enjoyed sharing meals and playing cards as well as a trip to the Q Casino for the buffet and $10 Free Play. One Wednesday, while Dean and C006huck headed in to Home Depot, Radio Shack & such, Judy and I joined a group of Boomers at the Main Street Theatre to see the movie ‘The Tourist’. We all enjoyed it and had a great time. Chuck and I also headed into The Foothills a couple of times to visit with Joanne. We’ve been have wonderful visits & so happy that we get to spend time with her.

007Last Monday we and the Sheeley’s headed to Los Algodones, Baja, Mexico. We’ve made several trips down into this border town since we’ve been in AZ this winter and it remains a very safe place to visit and shop. To the left you can see Judy, Dean & Chuck walking along the sidewalk on the American side just before crossing into Mexico; at the right Judy is looking at the Mexican sign welcoming us to Algodones. We had fun wandering through all of the shops and wares displayed on the streets, shopping, visiting a wonderful paneria or bakery and had a delicious lunch of shrimp tacos at Lupitas, a sidewalk cafe. Below are some of the sights and wares displayed around town.

On Monday afternoon a BLM Officer came by with a pamphlet from their California Office and informed us that we were not parked within 350 feet of a numbered road so we would have to move. Hmmm…..the pamphlet nor posted signage does not mention this new rule but since we were going to Quartzsite soon and want to visit BLM land soon again and often, we moved. We joined another group of travelers that we know down near Sidewinder Road. It was good to see this group and join them for Happy Hour. Ritchie’s had driven out, too, to join us & the Sheeleys, Meilikes, Bennetts, Paynes, Whites and Gord & Darlene. After a trip to have brunch & stock up on provisions on Wednesday, yesterday was travel day. We headed over to Gray’s Well for water, dumped our tanks at the new facility in Blythe and arrived in Boomerville at Quartzsite to be greeted by Mattisons, Messicks, Harrisons and Sheeleys.  We are rig #5 and it sure looks different with this few rigs.  We joined Harrisons and Sheeley for a fun Happy Hour last night; today we’re walking and then off to Q to see what’s going on in town.008

(Jan) Happy New Year everyone!  We pray that everyone is blessed with much peace & love, health & happiness in 2011. We had an eventful New Years Eve here at Lake Mittry with the Boomers. We joined the group for the traditional Z Circle as one of the host rigs. Z Circle is a traveling Happy Hour with several couples (5 this year) hosting and the rest of the couples rotating to each host. At each host rig there is a different combination of people so everyone has a chance to get to know others in the Boomer group. We had 19 couple participate last night. After Z Circle we all headed out to the Fire to await the New Year with Hat, Horns, Baileys & Champagne. A good time was had by all!! Because today is quite cool part of the group in going into town to have dinner at Golden Corral & part of the group is staying here to have a trash-can-turkey and ham potluck. It’s cool but sunny, with little wind so Chuck & I will dress in jackets & earmuffs and stay here for the potluck.  The following were the couple that came to visit at our house last night.
